Title
And What About Workplace Mental Health? Reframing the ‘Safety Culture’ Construct
Abstract
Employee mental health and wellbeing are central to an organization’s bottom line. There is simply no circumventing this dynamic. With an ever-expanding shift in both cultural and generational attitudes towards work, and what it means to be both a viable and valuable employee, organizational leaders who fare well in this current climate are the ones who intrinsically understand this very important intersect. It is a fact that surveys continue to show an increasing trend in the number of employees reporting concerns with vocational stress, burnout, and poor mental health. Managers and C-Suite personnel are not exempt. A 2023 Deloitte and Workplace Intelligence survey (June) of both executive leaders and managers across four different nations, showed 75% of the former and 64% of the latter respondents were seriously considering opting for a job that would better support their wellbeing. And what about workplace fatality and injury rates? Could there be a connection between employee wellbeing and what also seems to be an increasing trend in these yearly outcomes? What does this mean for the safety industry and its current view of and approach to promoting ‘safety culture’? Is a reframe necessary? This session is designed to help safety and organizational leaders broaden their understanding of the importance of workplace mental health, and explore the intersect between employee wellbeing, psychological health and safety, physical health and safety, and workforce productivity.
